Atlantic Health System and Mevion to Launch Cutting-Edge Proton Therapy for Cancer Patients

Wednesday, June 12, 2024

Atlantic Health System, an integrated healthcare system renowned for setting quality healthcare standards in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the New York metropolitan area, is teaming up with Mevion Medical Systems.

The leading provider of compact single-room proton therapy systems, to introduce groundbreaking technology at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, situated at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey. The installation of the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System™ is slated for 2025 and promises to usher in a new era of advanced radiation oncology services.

Proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation therapy, precisely targets tumors, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and vital organs such as the brainstem, heart, and lungs.

Recent clinical trials have showcased proton therapy's comparable survival rates to traditional radiation therapy, with fewer side effects in treating head and neck cancers, leading to reduced malnutrition and reliance on feeding tubes for patients.

The MEVION S250-FIT system further enhances these benefits with its industry-leading features, including HYPERSCAN® Pencil Beam Scanning for Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) with a proton MLC, ensuring precise proton delivery and minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Real-time image guidance and adaptive therapy are facilitated by upright patient positioning and a large bore diagnostic CT from Leo Cancer Care.

This collaboration signifies a significant milestone for Atlantic Health System as it moves to become one of the global pioneers in transforming a conventional LINAC vault into a FIT proton therapy system installation.

The FIT Proton Therapy System is distinguished as the first and only full proton therapy system seamlessly installable in an existing LINAC vault, substantially reducing size, cost, and complexity associated with proton therapy.
